Mike Flye has been
pitching in big games in Greenville for years. The J.H. Rose
product always knew he wanted to play big time Division I
baseball. It was just a matter of getting the opportunity.
After finishing out strong in his final season of high school baseball,
Flye got that chance. Now he’s playing a key role in the Pirates
bullpen. The senior has 18 strikeouts in 18 innings this season
and has a 1-0 record. Flye joined Pirate Radio 1250 to talk
hoops, hitting home runs, and beating NC State.
Pirate Radio: If you are not playing baseball at East Carolina
what sport are you playing?
Mike Flye: Probably basketball.
Pirate Radio: What position? Point guard, shooting guard?
Flye: Probably center. I can’t handle the ball and I’ve got
a little bit of size on me I guess.
Pirate Radio: You think you could take John Fields one-on-one?
Flye: Probably not.
Pirate Radio: When did you know you wanted to be a Division I
baseball player?
Flye: About the time I got out of high school. I figured
out there was a chance of playing, but it’s kind of a dream you always
have as a kid.
Pirate Radio: Last year of high school? You grew up at
Rose, always a good local player. It took you that long to figure
out what you wanted to do? Or did you have other aspirations
coming out of high school?
Flye: It was never a question of what I wanted to do. It
was just a matter of if I could do it. But over my last couple of
years of high school I kind of figured out it was going all
right.
Pirate Radio: What are you watching on TV at night?
Flye: A little Sportscenter and whatever comes on the movie
channels I guess.
Pirate Radio: Favorite baseball movie?
Flye: Field of Dreams
Pirate Radio: You can invite three people to dinner with you
tonight past or present. Who are you inviting?
Flye: Probably invite Roger Clemens, Jonathon Papplebon, and Josh
Beckett.
Pirate Radio: Is there one team on the schedule you play year in
and year out you want to beat more than others?
Flye: NC State. No question about it.
Pirate Radio: You said that pretty quick. Any reasoning
behind that?
Flye: It’s always been a big rivalry even before I got
here. So there’s a storied history behind it and it’s that one
team on the schedule you always want to come out and win mid-week.
Pirate Radio: If you had to switch places with Ryan Tousley and
you are an everyday player in the lineup what’s your average right now,
how many dingers you got, what are your stats looking like?
Flye: Hitting about .275 with 8 bombs, leading the team.
Pirate Radio: Not bad, not bad at all. What’s the best
thing about being an East Carolina Pirate?
Flye: Being with these guys. Teams always talk about
chemistry, but I think there’s no better chemistry than on this
team. Just being around these guys everyday. You couldn’t
ask for better guys to be around.
Pirate Radio: Before you go. I went to Conley, you went to
Rose. Say something nice about the Vikings.
Flye: They got a good head coach. But I don’t really like
seeing that jersey every now and then.
